This is the island where Greek tradition and western influence come to a harmonious marriage. Ermo\u00fapoli<\/b> (meaning \u201cthe city of Hermes\u201d) is the island\u2019s capital town and has been the first important trade and industrial centre of the country in the 19th century. Evidence of this glorious past<\/b> can be seen on public buildings (the City Hall, the Customs Office, \u201cApollo\u201d theatre), on the neoclassical houses<\/b> and at the beautiful squares. Due to its economic activity, Ermo\u00fapoli has been called \u201cManchester of Greece\u201d and the history of its years of blossom is exhibited in the Industrial Museum.<\/p>\n

The Orthodox community has contributed some outstanding religious monuments<\/b> to the architecture of Ermo\u00fapoli such as the churches of Metam\u00f3rphossi tou Sot\u00edros (Transfiguration of Jesus Christ), St Nicolas the Rich (\u00c1yios Nik\u00f3laos Plo\u00fassios), Dormition of the Mother of God (Ko\u00edmissis tis Theot\u00f3kou).<\/p>\n

\"Vaporia\"<\/p>\n

The medieval quarter<\/b> of the Roman Catholic community and the fortress-like St George\u2019s cathedral are on St George hill, also named \u00c1no S\u00fdros (meaning upper S\u00fdros). Go up the stairs to the top of the hill and through the narrow streets<\/b>, by the traditional whitewashed houses, the archways and the open spaces with a breathtaking view of the island.<\/p>\n

The great number of beautiful beaches<\/b> will delight the sea and sand lovers: V\u00e1ri, Fo\u00ednikas, Yaliss\u00e1s and K\u00edni, as well as Possidonia or Dellagrazia, the beach of a village with many neoclassical mansions with colourful orchards.<\/p>\n

S\u00fdros is well-known for its gastronomic peculiarities<\/b>. Halva pie (a pie made of thyme honey and roasted almonds), louko\u00fami (a delight made of water, starch and sugar), \u201cloosa\u201d ham, fennel sausages and the San Mihalis spicy cheese (appellation d’origine contr\u00f4l\u00e9e\/\u201dprotected designation of origin”) will no doubt satisfy even the most demanding taste buds.<\/p>\n

Internationally acclaimed festivals<\/b> are held on S\u00fdros, offering a wide range of choices and covering any taste, e.g. The International Cyclades Music Festival, the Classical Music Festival, the Ermoup\u00f3lia and the Musical May.<\/p>\n
