The &#8220;wonder of the Morea&#8221; is none other than an entire town structured within a fortress. Perched on a hillside and dating back to 1249 AD, Mystras is a sight for sore eyes. A place where the medieval influences are evident all around, carved in stone and overlooking the breathtaking landscape from above. During the Byzantine era, this has been the second most significant religious center after Constantinople. With absolute respect to tradition and the historic value of Mystras, the buildings have been\u00a0shaped according to the past design and the houses have been constructed amphitheatrically. As per the surroundings, the stone and wood are the main materials used for the town, creating a mystical and enchanting place in the world. To celebrate the history of Mystras, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Greece.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travel-zone-greece.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/mystras-e1560108638450.jpg\" alt=\"mystras\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hiking is an exquisite activity and one of the top things to do, when visiting Mystras castle town. Among the major sightseeing options for you to enjoy in the area, take pictures of the Palace of the Despots and the Cathedral of Agios Dimitrios (as mentioned above, this is where the last Byzantine Emperor was crowned), the Archaeological Museum and the Church of Agia Sofia, the Churches of Panagia Pantanassa and Odigitria, as well as the Monastery of Panagia Perivleptos and of course the Cavern of Keadas. The last is famous for a different reason, when compared to the rest. More specifically, this is a place strongly correlated with the past of the Spartans.
