Its volcanic identity is prevalent, while there have been significant influences from the Venetians. The typical Cycladic architecture with whitewashed houses composes the dreamiest scenery. And along with all that, Nisyros monasteries and churches highlight the devout nature of the locals. Below we will see some of the major monasteries of Nisyros.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travel-zone-greece.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/nisyros-monasteries-2-e1553421622742.jpg\" alt=\"nisyros monasteries\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Without a doubt, the Monastery of the Virgin of the Cave (Moni Panagias Spilianis) is the most popular in Nisyros, near Mandraki. The monastery dates back to the 14th century and is built on top of a hill within the Venetian castle, the Castle of the Knights Hospitaller. As you can guess from its name, the monastery is located inside a cave. In order to reach the religious monument, you need to walk up a stair of 170 steps. The climb is not steep and it offers you a wonderful view of the rest of the island and the endless sea. According to the legend, a farmer from the island found the cave back in the 14th century and there was an icon of Virgin Mary inside. Even though he tried to move it, the icon seemed to return to this exact location.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travel-zone-greece.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/nisyros-villages-4-e1553357206954.jpg\" alt=\"nisyros monasteries\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At an altitude of 450 meters above sea level, the Monastery of Panagia Kera or else the Monastery of Our Holy Lady. This is found within short distance from Emporios village and there is a great festival taking place on site on 23rd August. Then, the monastery of\u00a0St John the Theologian is located in the village of Nikia. You can reach the monastery, if you decide to walk towards the volcano. The stroll is very pleasant and allows you to discover the island from a privileged point of view. And finally, the Monastery of Agios Stavros is found on the southwestern part of the caldera and provides exquisite views.
