Gyali islet is found in the middle of the sea, with a mere 21 inhabitants but with a much more breathtaking beauty. It is part of Dodecanese and is a volcanic island, having been shaped after numerous eruptions over the centuries. A declared place of Natural Beauty, the islet is protected and holds a rich archaeological past. On site, there are traces of a Neolithic settlement and an ancient cemetery.<\/p>\n

When you look at Gyali from a distance, the first thing you notice is the presence of two hills, each on either side of the island. These hills are connected through a thin slice of land, called an isthmus. If you are wondering about its name, Gyali or else Giali or Yali is the Greek word for Glass. Apart from pumice stone, there is also a substantial amount of obsidian and perlite on the island. These natural sources of glass have resulted in naming the land after its most precious material.<\/p>\n
