In front of the Castle of the Knights, there is the Hippocrates Plane Tree. A historic tree of humongous size stands proudly and greets passers-by. If you look at the great Greek physician, you will probably see him teaching under an old plane tree. This was supposed to be the very same tree, even though the dates do not match. Legend has it that the now-500-year-old plane tree is located exactly where Hippocrates used to teach. But even if the story is not confirmed by scientists, it is still an attraction worth visiting on the island.<\/p>\n

Hippocrates Garden Cultural Center is located in the picturesque settlement of Mastichari. It is an exact representation of the old settlement, dating back to the 5th century BC. There you will be able to glimpse at the ancient way of life. Back in the day when Hippocrates lived, everything was simpler and life went by slowly. You will find an Oikos, which is a traditional house from antiquity, along with the Philosopher\u2019s Arcade and a stone built theater. There are also rich gardens with herbs, precious for their healing properties. This is a splendid place that allows you to delve in the ancient world!<\/p>\n

Finally, located near the ancient city of Kos, Asklipieio is one of the most famous landmarks on the island. Embraced by tall trees, this is the place where Medicine was founded as Science. Once a place of worship, Hippocrates used the location to establish a school and teach others about Medicine. Although this site dates back to antiquity and more specifically the 5th century BC, excavations revealed its value only in the 20th century. Besides the historic remains with pillars and columns, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a panoramic view to the sea and the rest of the island.
