Depicting the love of the locals for Christianity, these churches are marvels of ecclesiastical design. The oldest one of them is the Church of Agios Athanasios in Skopelos. It is located in Kastro area and is a basilica. An emblematic structure, built in the castle grounds and offering a glimpse at the island&#8217;s architecture.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travel-zone-greece.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Agios-Athanasios-in-Skopelos-2-e1539642525765.jpg\" alt=\"Agios Athanasios in Skopelos\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Church of Agios Athanasios in Skopelos dates back to the 9th century. It is the town&#8217;s first metropolitan church. In fact, it has been erected on the ruins of an ancient temple of Athena. Kastro is a Venetian fortress and thus the church is structured in a vantage point of the island. The privileged position of the church allows superb views to the Aegean Sea. If you look at it on the outside, the structure resembles a white dove or a cloud right between the sea and sky. The frescoes indoors are equally breathtaking. Once you are in Kastro, you are encouraged to step inside and light a candle.
