Profitis Ilias in Patmos is a small church, with great significance. After all, the island is filled with devoutness. It is also known as Profitis Ilias Thesvitis. In 1764, a monk from Symi created this small monastery. His name was Neophytos Simiakos and he founded the hermitage, building fortification around the site. So the entire area was protected from all external enemies and harm.<\/p>\n

Nowadays, the hermitage is one of the most famous attractions on the island of Patmos. Due to its location, everybody visits the church to admire the view. But it is also a place of great holiness. Those who wish to reach Profitis Ilias on foot may follow the path starting at Chora. From there, they will need to walk towards the highest spot in Patmos. The whole path is about 1 kilometer long. But beware, as it follows an upward trajectory and might be steep at times. Upon accessing the peak, however, travelers are surely compensated.<\/p>\n

One of the most important days in the year for the monastery is 20th July, celebration and feast day of the Prophet. On this day, the hermitage is open to the public for prayers. But whenever you visit Patmos, a climb up to the highest place on the island is a must. The feeling you get when you stand there observing the world from above is definitely liberating.
