One of the major archaeological attractions on the island of Milos<\/a> is definitely Milos Catacombs. A distinct religious landmark for the Christians, built around the 1st<\/sup> century AD. This is supposedly when Christianity first appeared in the area. As you can imagine, the catacombs are placed underground. What Makes Milos Catacombs Special?<\/h2>\n

As mentioned above, Milos Catacombs are one of the best preserved religious attractions. Their main use was as burial places for Christians. However, they were also used as a shelter. In the early days, Christians were prosecuted. So this was a place where they could find refuge.<\/p>\n

Located near Tripiti village, the catacombs are finely carved and reveal the unearthly beauty of Milos. As happens throughout the island, rock formations are awe-inspiring and offer a unique spectacle. In order to access them, you will need to climb a steep hill. Ascending is difficult, but highly rewarding.<\/p>\n

It is important to note that Milos catacombs were brought to light back in 1844. You will come up with various labyrinths on site. This is of course justifiable. Christians needed a place to baffle the Romans. So the structure of the catacombs needed to be challenging.<\/p>\n

In addition, each burial found within the catacombs was lit using an oil lamp. On the burial, you can still see the Alpha and Omega. These letters signify the beginning and the end.<\/p>\n
