Tilos Monasteries & Churches

Tilos is an island of distinctive character, with hospitable locals and mesmeric landscapes. As you get to explore its magical identity, you will discover a long-lasting history that dates back to antiquity. Ancient temples and ruins of Medieval fortresses, castles and caves with fossils from Paleontology, they all blend together most wonderfully. And among all that, Tilos monasteries and churches depict the island’s profound devoutness.

The most famous historic pilgrimage in Tilos is of course the Monastery of Agios Panteleimonas. This is the protector of Tilos and it has survived through the years in all its glory. You can see the monastery at an altitude of 270 meters above sea level, on the hill of Kryallos. It dates back to the 15th century and has undergone restoration over the years, so as to maintain its authentic structure. The view from up there is purely breathtaking, while there are icons and frescoes indoors that are worth observing more closely.

Moving on with our list of Tilos monasteries and churches, at Megalo Chorio you will have the chance to visit the Church of Taxiarchis. This is also called the Church of Archangel Michael and dates back to 1425. As soon as you reach the village, you will be stunned by its special vibe. The yard features small dark pebbles, creating forms on the ground that mesmerize you. Besides that, the icons and the iconostasis from the 19th century will amaze you, for sure. And of course, the view from up there is enticing!
