Chalki is a lovely island of Dodecanese, with a name that derives from Chalkos (meaning Copper). This was a prominent material found along the island in the past, which explains where the name came from. Now, the capital of the island and main port is none other than Nimborio. A neoclassical settlement built amphitheatrically above sea level. Ever since the locals faced the threats of pirates and came to realize they should not be afraid, they moved from the older settlement and former capital Chorio to Nimborio. Closer to the sea, closer to the harbor, closer to communication and trade, fishing and maritime.
This is one of the most impressive neoclassical settlements in the Greek islands, with imposing and well-preserved mansions shaping the picturesque neighborhoods with the lovely narrow pathways. Right in front of the Town Hall, you will get to see the huge stone clock tower. Agios Nicolaos church is another attraction of Nimborio, boasting the tallest bell tower in Dodecanese and a mesmerizing pebble yard outdoors. There are also three windmills on the hill, while you are most welcome to experience the authentic islander’s lifestyle at the main square. This is where you find the best taverns and cafés, souvenir stores and traditional quaint shops. A blend of tourists and locals bringing out the best of them both.
Within short distance from the settlement of Nimborio, you will have the opportunity to explore the famous Chorio and the fortress of the Knights of Rhodes, the Monastery of Taxiarchis Michael and Kameno Spilio. Schedule a trip to Nimborio, whether you are staying there for the night or not. Have a taste of local delicacies, fresh fish and seafood and enjoy the splendidly relaxed atmosphere. A unique experience in the Aegean, highlighting the uniqueness of this blessed place of Greece!
