The Hellenic-Australian Memorial Park in Crete

Just outside Rethymno city in Crete you will find a great WWII memorial park, commemorating the Battle of Crete, during which Cretans were fighting side by side with Australians in 1941.

The memorial is made of three flanking pillars. Two of them clad in a rough-surfaced local limestone to represent the Greek soldiers and civilians and a central pillar clad in a polished black granite from South Australia which portrays the Australian forces.

This installation is hosted in a tranquil environment which enables visitors to pause and reflect on the sacrifice of those honored and remembered. Additionally one will find information panels with photographs and maps in Greek and English text to narrate the history of Australian involvement in the Greek and Cretan campaigns.

Travel Zone has designed a special historic tour package dedicated to the Battle of Crete and the alliance of Crete, Australia and New Zealand! This includes visits to the most important sites, monuments and museums, attending ceremonies and lectures by certified tour guides.
