Traditionally, on the second weekend of September the locals on the island of Spetses celebrate a magnificent event. This is what is going to happen in Spetses Armata 2017! One of the emblematic victories of the Greek army and navy is praised in all its glory. And the spectacle will blow your mind, should you happen to visit the island during the festivities.
Why Celebrate Spetses Armata 2017?
During the Greek War of Independence in 1821 (or else known as the Greek Revolution), the Turks resisted fiercely. The Greeks did not give up, though. A year after the initiation of the revolution, on 8th September 1822, the Turkish naval fleet (the Armada or Armata) was defeated by the locals. It is this joyful event that is represented each year in the waters of Argosaronic Gulf.
During Spetses Armata 2017, there will be a lot of festivities with both cultural and religious events. At the end of the festival, there will be a representation of the seafight between the Greeks and the Turks. Fireworks fill the sky with lights and remind everyone of the event. The church bells ring cheerfully. Tradition is revived yet again for another year…till the next year of course!
