Greek Independence Day

What do you know of the glorious fight of the Greeks against the Ottomans? After a long time in slavery, warriors all over the country joined forces and organized the “Greek Revolution”. Starting in 1821, the battle lasted till 1829. Upon its end, a new state was born. The newly acclaimed Greek state, a place that had to be reborn from the ashes like a phoenix. And it all started with the Greek Independence Day.

March 25th is a special day for Greece. It is the day all Greeks remember as the beginning of the revolution. Although all over the country there was uprising, the heart of the Greek war was in Peloponnese. Famous warriors that signed the Greek war in gold ink include Theodoros Kolokotronis, Georgios Karaiskakis and Yannis Makriyannis. But besides the mainland, seamen of great talent and wisdom contributed to the revolution. Constantine Kanaris and Andreas Miaoulis were among them.

And of course, who can forget the women? Proud and strong, Manto Mavrogenous and Laskarina Mpoumpoulina became immortal due to their never-ending battle. Last but definitely not least, Philhellenes like Lord Byron proved their love for Greece and their respect to their noble cause. As a result, they joined the battle and fought side by side or they spread the word about the untold injustice taking place in Greece.

Across the country, children from schools form the most stunning parade. They walk in line and pay tribute to the people who have lost their lives, fighting for freedom. And besides them, the military and naval forces walk proudly and inform everyone of their presence. Of course, up in the sky the airforce organizes a very special spectacle. The closer you get to the clouds, the best! After all, the heroes of 1821 are bound to hear the roars of the Greeks. They celebrate along with future generations, because it is all their work!
