The Great Castle Town of Monemvasia

Located on the southeastern coast of the Peloponnese, Monemvasia certainly knows how to impress. Perched on the edge of the steep cliffs, overlooking the deep blue sea and the mesmeric horizon, this is hands down one of the most romantic places in Greece…and the world. The medieval castle town lies on a rock, connected to the rest of the mainland through a single strip of land. This is the meaning of its name, after all. Monemvasia means “single entrance”. And even though it might seem hard to climb up to the top, what you find there undoubtedly compensates you for all your effort.

The fairytale atmosphere overwhelms you, as you are introduced to the distinctive identity of Monemvasia. This castle town has never failed travelers’ anticipations. And its history is rich and imposing. Over the centuries, it has remained a strategic spot where the locals could foresee threats and deal with them effectively. Medieval touches from the Venetians, the Ottomans and the Byzantines have only added to its charms. The cobbled pathways and the mansions built of limestone, the churches and other historic sights, the hospitable locals and the mouth-watering traditional cuisine, the coffee houses with dramatic views over the Myrtoan Sea and the sunset that turns everything to violet, these are just elements of Monemvasia’s pure beauty. But you can never have enough of this mysterious and enchanting place on Earth…not even when you are here, experiencing every moment lost in time…

monemvasia

One of the prominent writers ever to have lived in Monemvasia, Yiannis Ritsos, has referred to this place as a “stone ship”. And indeed, it seems as if the huge rock is about to set sail. In searches of even more romantic destinations, even though that sounds highly unlikely. The residence of this wonderful man of Greek literature can be found in the area, with his bust declaring who lived there. Along with that, you may also visit Christos Elkomenos church, dating back to the 6th century with the famous icon of the Crucifixion. Besides this church, there are 23 more! And if this number does not impress you, what would you say if you found out that in the past there were 40 churches in total? If you are seeking a glimpse at the past and the lifestyle of the locals, be sure to visit the two folklore museums in the area, as well.
