Galaxidi is a marvelous destination, for long weekends and leisurely holidays by the sea. It used to be one of the most important naval hubs in Greece, still retaining its distinctive character and unique nature. Once you reach Galaxidi, you are instantly swept away by its splendor and unpretentious beauty. And of course, the local architecture with the stately homes and the fabulous Galaxidi churches adds to your experience.
Churches here are not at all ordinary. The locals have brought out their creativity, designing true masterpieces that stay imprinted in your mind forever. The Church of Agia Paraskevi is perhaps the most extraordinary church in the area. What makes it unique is the solar calendar on its roof. This calendar is not typically found in churches and this is something admirable. On the floor, there is a zodiac circle and its in yard there is a sundial. So everyday at noon, you can see the sun rays reflected on the sundial and you will know the time. Amazing? The church dates back to the 17th century and is made of stone and walnut wood.
Galaxidi churches also feature the Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos, patron Saint of the town. Saint Nicholas is the patron of maritime, after all. This is a somewhat younger church, built in 1902. It follows the Byzantine style of architecture, located on the highest point of the town. So everyone can see the church and the views are impeccable. This temple boasts an extremely beautiful ornate wooden icon screen. There are tall trees all around and a large court yard, while the interior design will fascinate you as much as the outdoors.
Visit the wonderful Galaxidi churches and become part of their grandeur, capturing their beauty and genuine style. This is an experience almost mystical, allowing you to truly comprehend the character of Galaxidi in its core.
