Cape Lefkatas: On the Edge of Romance

On the southwestern tip of Lefkada, Cape Lefkatas offers the ultimate romantic landscape. On the edge of the limestone cliffs, a lighthouse operating on oil provides safety to ships wandering the seas. Else known as Cape Lefkas or Sappho’s Leap, this is a place where romance overflows. And even though it is quite far from Lefkada Town, it is a must-see attraction for everyone visiting the island.

Cape Lefkatas

According to the myth, the famous Lesbian poet Sappho jumped over the cliff, after finding out that the love of her life did not love her back. Over time, a lot more people have ended their lives there jumping off the towering cliffs. It is the vastness of the sea and the fierce surroundings that provoke such intense feelings. And at sunset, the sun approaches the sea and colors are reflected most wonderfully on the rocks. However, white is the color that prevails even then. This is a reason why it is called Lefkatas Cape. After all, Lefko means White in Greek and there is strong resemblance.

Cape Lefkatas

Cape Lefkatas has been used as a place for punishment. Those who were sick or even considered ill-minded were thrown off the cliffs to repent. Sometimes, they survived the fall and there were ships ready to save them. Nowadays, the towering height of the scenery has been put to a different use. Visitors may indulge in hang gliding to get the 100% experience of altitude and fierceness. And there is a diving school in the lighthouse. The old structure, Doukato Lighthouse, dating back to 1890 has been transformed into a place of recreational activities. And this is something worth keeping in mind!
