Andros is a mountainous island, located on the northernmost part of Cyclades. Its proximity to the mainland and its impressive coastline, the hospitable locals and the noteworthy gastronomy have all placed Andros at the top of tourist destinations in Greece. Be it a weekend getaway, a cruise to the nearby islands or longer vacations, this is a wonderful suggestions for all those wishing to combine relaxation, along with great activities and of course swimming, diving and sunbathing! So let’s have a look at some of the best Andros beaches to explore and enjoy, shall we?
Right between Kypri and Agios Petros, Chrissi Ammos is a long beach on the island of Andros that attracts many visitors on a daily basis. It is fully organized and its name literally translates to Golden Sand. There are sunbeds and umbrellas, as well as beach bars and a lot of facilities to serve the needs and wants of all travelers. Water sports are also available on site, while the size of the beach prevents you from feeling crowded.
Tis Grias To Pidima is hands down the most popular beach on the island. Although it is not easily accessible and instead you need to follow a downhill path to get there (or go by boat), everyone schedules a visit at this legendary beach. There are several versions of the myth according to its name, which is Greek for “Old Woman’s Jump”. The most likely one suggests that an old woman was sent to the Castle, which is found on the highest peak of the island and was used as protection against the Turks. She was sent along with her pregnant daughter, so as to penetrate the protective fortress and find a breach. She opened a gate and the enemies found an opportunity to overtake the castle. The old woman was shamed and felt such intense remorse, causing her to jump from the cliff to the sea. On the very spot where she jumped, a huge cliff emerged. This is the famous landmark of the beach.
Batsi is another wonderful beach, family friendly and provides a fabulous natural harbor. It is a fully organized beach, ideal for water sports as well as fun and relaxation. You may combine your swimming activities along with dining out, overlooking the sea and the magnificent sunset. And then, there are many other Andros beaches to look out for. Achla is just the place to be, if you are searching for isolation and crystalline waters. Kypri is a fine beach, without the crowds and the noises of other options. Halkolimnionas, Chora beach and Ormos are also great and should be added to your “to-do” list.
