Alonnisos is an island of Sporades complex, boasting its distinct character and unpretentious beauty with amazing Alonnisos villages and settlements worth exploring.
Upon reaching the island, you find yourself in Patitiri. This is where you see the port and just 5 minutes from this spot, you access Roussoum Yialos. Indeed, Roussoum Yialos is the most famous beach for swimming in the wider area and you can reach it smoothly by car. As to the name Roussoum, it derives from the Turkish word for taxation. In the past, the port served as a commercial hub and therefore the merchants had to pay taxes, prior to shipping their products across the sea. Hence the name, which literally translates to “Taxation Seacoast”. The settlement also features some fish taverns and stores along the promenade and is located within short distance to Votsi. Votsi is a small fishing village of Alonnisos, with a serene beach that invites you to enjoy. In fact, Patitiri has been joined along with Roussoum Yialos and together they have all formed the Municipality of Alonnisos.
Alonnisos villages could not leave out the Old Village, Old Alonnisos or Chora. Superbly nestled on the top of an imposing hill, this is a wonderful settlement with the most breathtaking view. You have the option of following the path climbing up to the village or choose the more pleasant donkey ride. It is a historic village made primarily out of stone, with cobbled pathways and a laid-back atmosphere that captivates you at first sight. The once vibrant Old Alonnisos was abandoned due to an earthquake back in the 1960s. There are, however, many wonderful accommodation options still on site and you should visit it at least at sunset!
Another picturesque fishing village is Steni Vala. A little closer than 10 miles from Patitiri, this village features a quiet little cove and peaceful shelter for boats. Among the most striking details about Steni Vala is the fact that it includes a hospital treating monk seals. And finally, Kalamakia completes the quaint fishing villages that can easily be reached by Patitiri within a few minutes’ drive. Once you are there, try out the lobster spaghetti and you will love it!
